Avios Points Guide 2026: Best Ways to Earn & Redeem British Airways Miles

Hero image for Avios Points Guide 2026: Best Ways to Earn & Redeem British Airways Miles

Avios might be the most versatile points currency you’re not fully utilizing. Unlike most airline miles, Avios transfer in from every major credit card program — Chase, Amex, Capital One, and Bilt all send points to British Airways and its partner programs.

Even better, Avios use a distance-based award chart that makes short flights absurdly cheap. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Are Avios?

Avios is the loyalty currency used by four programs:

  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Iberia Plus
  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club (partial — they also have Qmiles)

These programs are linked through the Avios partnership, meaning you can transfer Avios between them (with some restrictions). Each program has its own award chart and sweet spots, so savvy collectors maintain accounts with multiple programs.

How to Earn Avios

Transfer Partners (Best Method)

Avios transfer 1:1 from every major transferable points program:

ProgramTransfer RatioSpeed
Chase Ultimate Rewards1:1Instant
Amex Membership Rewards1:11-2 days
Capital One Miles1:1Instant
Bilt Rewards1:1Instant

This flexibility is Avios’ superpower. You can consolidate points from multiple programs for larger redemptions, or just transfer from whichever program has a bonus running.

Pro tip: Watch for transfer bonuses. Chase and Amex periodically offer 20-40% bonuses to British Airways — we track these in our transfer bonus posts.

Credit Cards

British Airways Visa Signature Card:

  • 3x Avios on BA purchases
  • 2x on hotels and car rentals
  • 1x everywhere else
  • 75,000 Avios welcome bonus
  • Travel Together Ticket after spending $30,000

The Travel Together Ticket (companion certificate) is valuable if you fly BA frequently, but most people are better off earning flexible points that transfer to Avios.

Flying & Partnerships

Earn Avios when flying British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, or any Oneworld partner (American, Cathay, JAL, Qantas, etc.) by crediting to your BA Executive Club account.

The Distance-Based Award Chart (Key to Value)

Unlike most US airlines with fixed award pricing, British Airways uses distance-based charts. Shorter flights cost fewer Avios:

British Airways Chart (Peak/Off-Peak)

DistanceEconomyBusiness
1-650 miles6,000-7,50012,500-15,000
651-1,150 miles8,000-10,00016,500-20,000
1,151-2,000 miles10,000-13,00025,000-31,250
2,001-3,000 miles13,000-20,00050,000-62,500
3,001-4,000 miles26,000-32,50062,500-75,000

Why this matters: A 500-mile flight that costs 7,500 Avios might price at $300+ in cash. That’s 4 cents per Avios — exceptional value. Meanwhile, long-haul flights often deliver poor value because Avios scale with distance.

The sweet spot strategy: Use Avios for short flights, use other miles (United, ANA, etc.) for long-haul.

Best Avios Sweet Spots

1. American Airlines Short-Hauls (7,500 Avios)

This is the #1 use of Avios for US travelers.

Any AA flight under 1,150 miles costs just 7,500 Avios in economy through British Airways. Compare that to AA’s own pricing of 10,000-15,000+ miles for the same flights.

Best routes:

  • NYC ↔ Miami (1,089 miles) — 7,500 Avios vs $200-400 cash
  • LAX ↔ San Francisco (337 miles) — 7,500 Avios
  • Dallas ↔ Austin (190 miles) — 7,500 Avios
  • Chicago ↔ Detroit (235 miles) — 7,500 Avios

How to book: Search availability on AA.com, then call BA or book on BA.com using your Avios.

2. Alaska Airlines to Hawaii (13,000 Avios)

Alaska is a Oneworld partner, and BA can book Alaska flights. LA to Hawaii is approximately 2,500 miles, pricing at 13,000 Avios one-way in economy.

Cash prices to Hawaii often exceed $300 one-way, making this a 2+ cent per Avios redemption.

3. Cathay Pacific Business Class (Off-Peak)

Cathay operates some of the best business class products in the world. Using Avios through BA:

  • Hong Kong → Tokyo: 25,000 Avios in business
  • Hong Kong → Singapore: 31,250 Avios in business

The catch: BA passes through hefty fuel surcharges on Cathay. Check pricing carefully — sometimes transferring to Alaska Mileage Plan for Cathay is smarter.

4. Iberia to Europe (Off-Peak)

Iberia’s Avios chart has different sweet spots than BA. Off-peak transatlantic business class:

  • NYC → Madrid: 34,000 Avios one-way (off-peak)
  • Miami → Madrid: 34,000 Avios one-way (off-peak)

That’s 50% less than peak pricing. Iberia doesn’t charge fuel surcharges on their own flights, making this one of the cheapest ways to Europe in business class.

To access: Transfer Avios from BA to Iberia (free, but requires both accounts linked).

5. Aer Lingus Positioning Flights

Aer Lingus charges just 8,500 Avios for economy flights between the US and Ireland (compared to BA’s much higher pricing for similar distances).

If you’re connecting through Dublin anyway, Aer Lingus Avios redemptions are a smart play.

BA vs Iberia vs Aer Lingus: Which to Use?

Use CaseBest Program
AA domestic flightsBritish Airways
Transatlantic to SpainIberia (off-peak, no surcharges)
Transatlantic to IrelandAer Lingus
Cathay Pacific AsiaBritish Airways (but check surcharges)
Qatar AirwaysQatar Privilege Club
JAL/Japan flightsIberia (lower surcharges)

Transfer Avios between programs:

  • BA ↔ Iberia: Free, 24 hours
  • BA ↔ Aer Lingus: Free, 24 hours
  • Must link accounts through “Combine My Avios” on each site

Fuel Surcharges: The Avios Downside

British Airways is notorious for high fuel surcharges on award tickets. A “free” flight can come with $500-800+ in surcharges on long-haul BA metal.

How to avoid surcharges:

  1. Book partner airlines — AA, Alaska, Cathay, etc. have lower or no surcharges
  2. Use Iberia — No surcharges on Iberia-operated flights
  3. Aer Lingus metal — Lower surcharges than BA
  4. Stick to short-hauls — Surcharges scale with distance; domestic AA flights have minimal fees

When NOT to Use Avios

Long-haul economy on BA metal: Surcharges kill the value. A London-NYC economy award might cost 26,000 Avios + $600 in fees. Just pay cash at that point.

Complex itineraries: BA charges per segment, not per route. A connecting itinerary can cost double or triple a direct flight. Other programs (United, ANA) are better for connections.

Last-minute bookings: BA doesn’t release much partner availability close-in. If you’re booking within 2 weeks, check United or AA directly.

How to Search & Book Avios Awards

Step 1: Find Availability

Search on BA.com, but also check:

  • AA.com — For AA space you’ll book through BA
  • AlaskaAir.com — For Alaska space
  • Qantas.com — Sometimes shows partner space BA doesn’t

Step 2: Transfer Points (Only When Ready)

Never speculatively transfer to Avios. Wait until you see availability, confirm it’s bookable, then transfer. Chase and Bilt transfer instantly.

Step 3: Book

  • Online: BA.com for BA, AA, and some partners
  • Phone: Call BA Executive Club for complex bookings or partners not showing online

Avios Valuation

We value Avios at 1.3-1.5 cents each on average, but sweet spots deliver more:

Redemption TypeTypical Value
AA short-haul (under 650 mi)2-4+ cpp
Alaska to Hawaii2-2.5 cpp
Iberia off-peak to Europe2-3 cpp
BA long-haul economy0.5-1 cpp (avoid)
Cathay business (with surcharges)1-1.5 cpp

Target 1.5+ cpp minimum; aim for 2+ cpp on sweet spots.

The Bottom Line

Avios are a must-have in your points arsenal because:

  1. Universal transfers — Every major program sends points to Avios
  2. AA short-haul sweet spots — 7,500 Avios for domestic flights is unbeatable
  3. Iberia off-peak deals — Cheap business class to Europe without surcharges
  4. Flexibility — Pool Avios across BA, Iberia, and Aer Lingus as needed

The key is using Avios for what they’re good at (short flights, specific sweet spots) and avoiding their weaknesses (long-haul BA with surcharges).

Build your Avios stash through transfer bonuses, then deploy them strategically for maximum value.
