Bilt 2.0 officially launched today (February 7, 2026), and… it’s not exactly what we expected.

If you’re a Bilt cardholder waking up to emails about transitioning your card, or you’ve been waiting to sign up — here’s the full breakdown of what actually changed.

The headline: Earning points on rent and mortgages is still free. But now you need to actually use your Bilt card to unlock those rewards.

The Three New Cards

Bilt moved from Wells Fargo to Cardless, replacing the single Bilt Mastercard with three tiers:

Bilt Blue Card — $0 Annual Fee

  • 1x points + 4% Bilt Cash on all purchases
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Access to rent/mortgage rewards (via Bilt Cash)
  • World Elite Mastercard benefits
  • Welcome bonus: $100 in Bilt Cash upon approval

Bilt Obsidian Card — $95 Annual Fee

  • 2x points on dining, travel, and streaming + 4% Bilt Cash
  • 1x on everything else + 4% Bilt Cash
  • Enhanced Rent Day benefits
  • Cell phone protection
  • Welcome bonus: $200 in Bilt Cash upon approval

Bilt Palladium Card — $495 Annual Fee

  • 3x points on dining and travel + 4% Bilt Cash
  • 2x on streaming, transit, fitness + 4% Bilt Cash
  • 1x on everything else + 4% Bilt Cash
  • Lounge access (via Priority Pass)
  • Enhanced concierge
  • Premium transfer bonuses
  • Welcome bonus: $500 in Bilt Cash upon approval

Note: You can only hold one Bilt credit card as the primary cardholder.

The Big Catch: Bilt Cash

Here’s what nobody saw coming: you now need to “earn” the right to earn rewards on rent.

The old system was simple — make 5 transactions per month, earn 1x on rent up to $50K/year. Done.

The new system introduces Bilt Cash:

How It Works

  1. Earn 4% Bilt Cash on all card spending (this is on top of your regular points)
  2. $3 in Bilt Cash = 100 Bilt Points on your rent/mortgage payment at 1x
  3. Bilt Cash expires on December 31 each year (you can roll over $100)

The Math (Important!)

Let’s say your rent is $2,000/month:

  • To earn 1x points on that $2,000, you need 2,000 points worth of Bilt Cash
  • That’s $60 in Bilt Cash (since $3 = 100 points)
  • To earn $60 in Bilt Cash, you need to spend $1,500 on your Bilt card (4% of $1,500 = $60)

Translation: You need to spend approximately 75% of your rent amount on the Bilt card each month to earn full 1x on rent.

If you only spend 50% of your rent on the card? You only earn rewards on ~67% of your rent payment.

What’s Better Than Before

It’s not all bad news. Here’s what improved:

1. No More $50K Cap

The old $50K annual limit on rewarded rent is gone. Earn on every dollar of housing payments.

2. Mortgages Now Qualify

Homeowners can finally earn Bilt points on mortgage payments. This was previously impossible.

3. Multiple Properties

You can now link and earn on more than one property — great for landlords or those with multiple homes.

4. Bigger Welcome Bonuses

The tiered welcome bonuses (up to $500 Bilt Cash on Palladium) are more substantial than before.

5. Better Earning Rates

Obsidian and Palladium offer 2-3x on dining and travel, making them more competitive as everyday cards.

What’s Worse Than Before

1. The “Pay to Play” Model

Under the old system, you made 5 transactions and earned 1x on rent. Now you need sustained spending to unlock the same benefit.

For minimal spenders who only used Bilt for rent? This is a significant downgrade.

2. Rent Payments via ACH Now

Previously, rent was charged to your card (giving you a billing cycle of float time). Now rent and mortgage payments are immediately debited from your bank account via ACH.

This matters if you were using that float period strategically.

3. Complexity

The old system was dead simple. The new Bilt Cash system requires planning and tracking. Some people might find this tedious.

Who Wins and Loses

Winners:

  • Heavy spenders who already put $3K+ on credit cards monthly
  • Homeowners who couldn’t earn mortgage points before
  • High earners with expensive rent/mortgages and matching spending
  • Premium travelers who want lounge access and enhanced earning

Losers:

  • Minimal spenders who only used Bilt for rent payments
  • The “5 transactions and done” crowd — that hack is dead
  • Float optimizers who benefited from the billing cycle delay
  • Simplicity seekers — this is now more complicated

The Transition Timeline

If you have the current Wells Fargo Bilt Card:

  1. Now: Choose your new card tier (Blue, Obsidian, or Palladium)
  2. Soft credit pull — no hard inquiry for upgrades
  3. Same card number — autopay and subscriptions stay linked
  4. Apple Pay/Google Pay update automatically

You’ll receive transition emails with specific instructions. Don’t ignore them.

My Take

This is classic points program evolution: make it harder to extract value without engagement.

Bilt was burning money on people who made 5 Amazon reloads per month and earned 50,000 rent points annually. That model wasn’t sustainable.

The new reality: Bilt is now a card you need to actually use to get full value. If you’re not willing to put 75% of your rent in spending on the card, you’re leaving points on the table.

For heavy spenders? This might actually be better — higher earning rates, no cap, mortgage rewards.

For minimal spenders? Time to reconsider whether Bilt still makes sense for you.

Should You Still Get Bilt?

Yes, if:

  • You naturally spend 75%+ of your rent on credit cards anyway
  • You want to earn on mortgage payments
  • You value Bilt’s transfer partners (especially Hyatt)
  • You’re willing to use the card as your primary

Maybe not, if:

  • You were a “5 transactions and done” user
  • You prefer cash back simplicity
  • Your credit card spending is well below your rent amount

The Bottom Line

Bilt 2.0 is live. It’s more complex, more rewarding for heavy users, and less friendly to minimal spenders.

If you’re already a Bilt fan and use credit cards heavily, the Obsidian or Palladium might be worth the fee. If you were coasting on minimal effort? The free Blue card still works, but you’ll need to spend to earn.

Welcome to the new Bilt era.
