American Airlines just reset everyone’s Loyalty Points balance on March 1, which means the race to earn 2027 elite status has officially begun. To help you get a head start, AA is offering a limited-time promotion that could earn you up to 5,000 bonus Loyalty Points through April 30, 2026.

Here’s everything you need to know about this status accelerator — and why you should register today.

The Deal

Promotion period: March 1 – April 30, 2026 (If you’re new to the AAdvantage program, check out our AA elite status guide first.)

Bonus earning structure:

  • 500 Loyalty Points per flight segment (base bonus)
  • +1,000 Loyalty Points per segment to/from Mexico or Caribbean airports
  • +1,000 Loyalty Points per segment for AAdvantage Business members or corporate travelers
  • Maximum bonus: 5,000 Loyalty Points total

Important: You must register before flying to earn these bonuses.

How to Register

Registration takes about 30 seconds:

Via the American app:

  1. Open the American Airlines mobile app
  2. Tap “AAdvantage” in the bottom menu
  3. Select “Promotions”
  4. Find “Ready, set, jet toward status” and register

Via the website:

  1. Log into your AAdvantage account at aa.com
  2. Navigate to your AAdvantage dashboard
  3. Look for the promotion under “Offers” or “Promotions”
  4. Click to register

That’s it. Once registered, you’ll automatically earn bonus Loyalty Points on qualifying flights through April 30.

What This Means for Your Status

Let’s put these numbers in context:

Status LevelLoyalty Points RequiredThis Promo Gets You…
Gold40,00012.5% of the way
Platinum75,0006.7% of the way
Platinum Pro125,0004% of the way
Executive Platinum200,0002.5% of the way

A round-trip domestic flight would earn you 1,000 bonus Loyalty Points (500 × 2 segments). A round-trip to Cancun or the Caribbean could earn you 3,000 bonus Loyalty Points (1,500 × 2 segments).

If you’re targeting Gold status (40,000 Loyalty Points), maxing out this promo gets you more than 10% of the way there before counting regular earning from flights, credit card spend, and partners.

Best Ways to Maximize This Promo

1. Book Connecting Flights Over Nonstops

Since you earn 500 bonus Loyalty Points per segment, two connecting flights earn more than one nonstop. A connection through DFW or CLT on your next trip means double the bonus segments.

Example: LAX → DFW → MIA (2 segments) = 1,000 bonus LP
vs. LAX → MIA nonstop (1 segment) = 500 bonus LP

2. Plan a Mexico or Caribbean Trip

The +1,000 per segment bonus for Mexico and Caribbean airports is significant. A round-trip to Cancun (CUN), Cabo (SJD), or San Juan (SJU) earns 3,000 bonus Loyalty Points vs. 1,000 for a domestic trip.

Sweet spots: Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Punta Cana, Nassau, San Juan

3. Stack with Credit Card Spending

Remember that Loyalty Points also come from spending on American co-branded credit cards:

  • Citi AAdvantage Executive: Earn 1 Loyalty Point per $1 spent (up to 40,000 LP/year)
  • Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select: Earn 1 Loyalty Point per dollar on AA purchases
  • Citi AAdvantage Globe: Includes FlightStreak bonus LP accelerators

For a full breakdown of which AA card is best for your situation, see our best airline credit cards guide.

Combine flight bonuses with card spending to accelerate your path to status even faster.

4. Book Award Flights (They Count!)

Flying on award tickets still earns Loyalty Points — just not the redeemable AAdvantage miles. If you’re burning miles on a trip anyway, you’ll still get the 500+ bonus Loyalty Points per segment from this promo. For the best award redemptions, check out our AA award chart sweet spots.

What You DON’T Get

Just to clarify: this promotion earns you bonus Loyalty Points (the currency for status qualification), NOT bonus AAdvantage miles (the currency for booking award flights).

You’ll still earn your regular AAdvantage miles for the flight based on fare class and status. The promotion just adds extra Loyalty Points on top.

Who Should Take Advantage

Register if you:

  • Fly American at least a few times per year
  • Are targeting AAdvantage elite status
  • Have upcoming travel on AA through April 30
  • Want free status accelerators (why not?)

Skip if you:

  • Never fly American
  • Already have status locked in for 2027
  • Won’t fly AA before April 30

The Bottom Line

This is free money toward status — there’s no reason not to register if you fly American at all. Even one or two flights during the promo period means 1,000-3,000 extra Loyalty Points you wouldn’t have earned otherwise.

Combined with the regular Loyalty Points you earn from flights and credit card spending, this promo can meaningfully accelerate your path to Gold or higher status.

Register now before your next AA flight. It takes 30 seconds and could save you thousands in status-qualifying spend over the course of the year.
