Great news for Marriott credit card holders: as of March 12, 2026, you can now top off free night award certificates with up to 25,000 Marriott Bonvoy points — a significant increase from the previous 15,000-point limit.

This 67% increase in the top-off maximum means your free night certificates can now reach higher-tier properties that were previously just out of reach.

What Changed

Marriott Bonvoy introduced the “top-off” feature back in 2022, allowing members to add up to 15,000 extra points to their free night certificates. The new limit of 25,000 points expands the possibilities considerably:

Certificate ValueOld Maximum (15K top-off)New Maximum (25K top-off)
35,000-point certificate50,000 points60,000 points
50,000-point certificate65,000 points75,000 points
85,000-point certificate100,000 points110,000 points

This change is particularly valuable because Marriott’s dynamic pricing often pushes popular properties just above the old thresholds — we’ve all seen hotels pricing at 51,000 or 52,000 points per night, seemingly designed to exclude certificate redemptions.

Why This Matters

If you’ve been frustrated by free night certificates that seem useless at your target properties, the new 25K top-off limit opens up significantly more options:

For 35K certificate holders (Boundless/Business cardholders):

  • Previously capped at 50K properties
  • Now can book up to 60,000-point properties
  • Opens up many more Category 5 and some Category 6 hotels

For 85K certificate holders (Brilliant cardholders):

  • Previously capped at 100K properties
  • Now can book up to 110,000-point properties
  • Unlocks many premium properties during standard/off-peak pricing

How to Earn Free Night Certificates

Free night awards come from several sources:

Credit Card Welcome Bonuses

  • Marriott Bonvoy Boundless: Currently offering up to 4 free nights (valued at 35K points each) after meeting spending requirements
  • Marriott Bonvoy Business: Up to 5 free nights (35K each) with tiered spending
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant: 200,000 bonus points (not free nights) in the current offer

Annual Card Benefits

  • Boundless/Business: 35,000-point certificate on card anniversary
  • Brilliant: 85,000-point certificate on card anniversary (the most valuable!)

Elite Status Benefits

  • 75-night Annual Choice Benefit: One option is a free night award
  • Select promotions: Marriott occasionally offers certificates through targeted promotions

Best Uses for Topped-Off Certificates

With the expanded 25K top-off limit, here are some sweet spots to consider:

60,000-point stays (35K cert + 25K top-off)

  • JW Marriott properties during off-peak periods
  • Westin resorts at standard rates
  • W Hotels in secondary markets
  • Autograph Collection hotels in popular destinations

110,000-point stays (85K cert + 25K top-off)

  • St. Regis properties on off-peak dates
  • Ritz-Carlton hotels at standard rates
  • EDITION hotels during lower-demand periods
  • Some all-inclusive resorts at standard pricing

The Math: Is Topping Off Worth It?

Before you add points to a certificate, consider the value you’re getting:

Example 1: Good deal

  • Hotel costs 58,000 points/night
  • Use 35K certificate + 23,000 points
  • Paying 23,000 points for a 58,000-point stay = excellent value

Example 2: Think twice

  • Hotel costs 52,000 points/night
  • Use 35K certificate + 17,000 points
  • Could also book a 48,000-point hotel with just the 35K + 13,000 points
  • Marginal benefit for additional points — worth it only if you specifically want that property

General rule: Top-off when you’re trying to reach a specific property you really want, not just to use more points.

Limitations to Know

A few important caveats:

  1. You still need the points: The top-off comes from your existing Marriott Bonvoy point balance
  2. Certificates still expire: Usually 12 months from issue — the top-off feature doesn’t extend validity
  3. Dynamic pricing applies: Hotel prices fluctuate, so a property within range today might not be tomorrow
  4. One certificate per stay: Can’t stack multiple certificates for longer stays

Our Take

This is a genuine improvement for Marriott cardholders. The old 15K limit felt artificially restrictive, especially given how aggressively Marriott has raised award prices since introducing dynamic pricing.

The 25K top-off doesn’t solve the underlying issue — that many properties have become significantly more expensive — but it does restore some utility to certificates that were increasingly gathering dust in members’ accounts.

Bottom line: If you’ve been holding free night certificates that couldn’t quite reach your target hotels, check again. That 51,000-point property that was frustratingly out of reach? Now it’s bookable with your 35K certificate plus 16,000 points.
